Robotic Vacuums

How to Choose a Robot Vacuum

The right robot vacuum depends on your floors, the layout of your home and how much maintenance you want to do yourself. Use the points below to narrow down the range, then check the full specifications on each product page.

Features to Compare

• Navigation and mapping: Many models use LiDAR laser sensors, cameras or a combination of both to map rooms and avoid obstacles. Mapping can let you clean specific rooms or set no-go zones in the companion app, where supported.
• Suction and brushes: Suction power is usually listed in pascals (Pa). Brush design also matters, especially in homes with pets or long hair, so compare the main brush and side brush details for each model.
• Mopping system: Vacuum and mop robots use pads, vibrating mops or rotating mops. Some models can lift their mops when they detect carpet. Check how the mop is cleaned and how often the water tank needs refilling.
• Docking station: A basic dock recharges the robot. Auto-empty docks transfer dust into a bag or bin, and all-in-one stations can also wash, refill and dry mops on supported models. Consider the dock size and where it will sit.
• Your floors and furniture: Check the robot's height against the gap under beds and sofas, and the maximum threshold it can climb if you have door strips or thick rugs.
• App and smart home control: Most current models are set up and controlled through a manufacturer app for scheduling, maps and cleaning settings. Voice assistant support and Wi-Fi requirements vary by model.
• Ongoing maintenance: Filters, brushes, mop pads and dust bags need regular cleaning or replacement. This category also includes selected replacement parts and accessories for supported models.

Which Type of Robot Vacuum Suits Your Home?

1. Vacuum only: A straightforward option for regular cleaning of hard floors and carpets.
2. Vacuum and mop: Adds mopping for hard floors, useful for homes with tiles, timber or vinyl.
3. Self-emptying: An auto-empty dock reduces how often you need to empty the robot's dustbin.
4. All-in-one station: Suits households wanting the least hands-on maintenance, with mop washing and water tank functions on supported models.

Robot Vacuum FAQs

Do robot vacuums work on carpet?

Most robot vacuums can clean low and medium pile carpet and rugs. Performance on thick or high pile carpet varies, so check the suction, brush design and carpet guidance for each model. If you choose a mopping robot, look for carpet detection or mop lifting.

Can a robot vacuum replace a regular vacuum?

A robot vacuum is designed to handle routine floor cleaning. Many households still keep a stick or handheld vacuum for stairs, upholstery, cars and spot cleaning.

Do robot vacuums need Wi-Fi?

Many models need a Wi-Fi connection and the manufacturer's app for setup, mapping, scheduling and updates. Some can also be started from a button on the robot. Check the supported Wi-Fi bands and app requirements in the product specifications.

What does a self-emptying dock do?

A self-emptying dock transfers debris from the robot's dustbin into a larger bag or container in the dock, so you empty it less often. Replacement bags and the dock's capacity vary by model.

Are robot vacuums suitable for homes with pets?

They can help with routine pet hair on floors. Look for brush designs suited to hair, a filter that suits your needs and obstacle avoidance features, and keep cables, pet bowls and small items off the floor before cleaning.

How often do parts need replacing?

It depends on use and the model. Filters, side brushes, mop pads and dust bags are typical replacement items. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance for your robot.
