Features to Compare Before You Buy

• Water tanks: Check the clean and dirty water tank capacities and how easy they are to empty and rinse.
• Self-cleaning and drying: Many docks flush the roller after use, and some dry it with warm air to help prevent odours and mould.
• Hot water or steam: Some models use heated water or steam for stubborn marks. Check the stated features for your floor type.
• Edge cleaning: Look at how close the roller gets to skirting boards and whether the head can lie flat under furniture.
• Battery and runtime: Check the stated runtime and how it compares with the size of your hard floor areas.
• Smart sensing: Some models adjust suction and water flow automatically based on how dirty the floor is.

How to Choose the Right Wet and Dry Vacuum

1. Measure your hard floor area and match it to the stated runtime and tank size.
2. Check that your floors are suitable for wet cleaning, following the flooring manufacturer's advice.
3. Decide whether self-drying, hot water or steam features matter to you.
4. Consider reach and manoeuvrability for under furniture and around edges.
5. Check availability of rollers, filters and cleaning solution for ongoing use.

Wet and Dry Vacuum FAQs

Can a wet and dry vacuum be used on carpet?

Most household wet and dry vacuums are designed for sealed hard floors and small rugs at most. Check each model's guidance and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Can I use any cleaning solution?

Use the cleaning solution recommended by the manufacturer. Other products can foam or affect the machine and may affect warranty.

How do I stop the machine from smelling?

Empty and rinse the dirty water tank after each use and let the roller dry. Models with self-drying docks help with this.

Are they safe on timber floors?

Many are suitable for sealed timber, but check with your flooring manufacturer and avoid leaving excess water on the surface.

Do I still need a normal vacuum?

For carpets and rugs, yes. A cordless stick vacuum or robot vacuum complements a wet and dry vacuum well.
