Smart Doorbells

Choosing a Smart Doorbell

A smart video doorbell sends an alert to your phone when someone presses the button or motion is detected, so you can check deliveries and visitors from almost anywhere. Start by deciding how the doorbell will be powered.

Battery or Wired?

• Battery doorbells: Simple to install without wiring and suitable for many homes and rentals. The battery needs recharging periodically, depending on use and settings.
• Wired doorbells: Connect to compatible existing doorbell wiring or a suitable power supply for continuous power. If new wiring or a transformer is needed, use a licensed electrician.

Features to Compare

• Video view: Compare resolution and field of view. Some models offer a taller head-to-toe view or a second camera for seeing parcels at the door.
• Two-way talk and quick replies: Speak with visitors through the app, with pre-recorded responses on some models.
• Motion and person detection: Adjustable motion zones and person detection on supported models can help reduce unwanted alerts.
• Storage: Recordings may be stored in the cloud, on a HomeBase or on a microSD card. Some recording features require a subscription.
• Chimes: Some doorbells work with an existing chime, while others use a plug-in chime. Check what is included and compatible.
• Smart displays: Many doorbells can show live view on compatible smart displays such as Echo Show or Nest Hub.

Smart Doorbell FAQs

Do I need existing doorbell wiring?

Not for battery models. Wired models need compatible doorbell wiring or another suitable power source. Check the power requirements for the model before buying.

Do video doorbells need a subscription?

Live view and basic alerts are often available without a plan, but some brands require a subscription for recorded video history and advanced features. Some doorbells support local storage instead.

Will a smart doorbell work with my existing chime?

Some wired doorbells can work with compatible existing chimes, while many battery doorbells use a plug-in chime or your phone and smart speakers for alerts. Check the chime compatibility for each model.

Can I answer the door when I'm not home?

Yes. When the doorbell is connected to Wi-Fi, you can see and talk to visitors through the app from your phone.
