Smart Speakers

Choosing a Smart Speaker or Display

A smart speaker can become the centre of your smart home, as well as a speaker for music, podcasts and radio. Choosing one starts with the voice assistant and devices you already use.

Choose Your Voice Assistant

Amazon Echo devices use Alexa, while Google Nest devices use Google Assistant. Each works with its own app and range of compatible services and smart home products, so choose the assistant that suits your phone, streaming services and existing devices. Some speakers, such as selected Sonos models, support a built-in voice assistant as well as their own app.

Speaker or Smart Display?

• Compact smart speakers: Small speakers such as Echo Dot or Nest Mini suit bedrooms, kitchens and offices for voice control, timers and everyday listening.
• Larger smart speakers: Larger models are designed for fuller sound for music around the home. Compare speaker size, room placement and multi-room support.
• Smart displays: Echo Show and Nest Hub add a touchscreen for video calls, recipes, photos, smart home controls and live view from compatible cameras.
• Smart clocks and hubs: Bedside smart clocks and smart home control panels offer a quick way to see the time, control devices and run routines.

Features to Compare

• Sound: Compare speaker size and audio features if music is a priority. Some models can be paired or grouped for multi-room audio.
• Smart home hub features: Some models include built-in hub support for protocols such as Matter, Zigbee or Thread. Check the supported standards if you plan to add sensors or lights.
• Privacy controls: Most smart speakers include a microphone mute button, and displays may include a camera shutter. Review the privacy settings in the assistant's app.
• Streaming services: Confirm the music, radio and podcast services you use are supported.

Build out your setup with smart lighting, smart sensors and smart cameras, or compare Bluetooth and home speakers if you only need audio.

Smart Speaker FAQs

What can a smart speaker do?

A smart speaker can play music, answer questions, set alarms and timers, read the news and control compatible smart home devices. Available features depend on the assistant and the services you connect.

Do smart speakers need Wi-Fi?

Yes. Most smart speakers need Wi-Fi and the companion app for setup, voice assistant features and streaming. Some models can also play audio from a phone by Bluetooth.

Can a smart speaker control my lights and other devices?

Yes, if the devices are compatible with your chosen assistant. Some devices connect directly, while others need a hub or the brand's app linked to Alexa or Google Home.

Are smart speakers always listening?

Smart speakers listen for their wake word before responding, and most include a microphone mute button. You can review and manage voice history and permissions in the assistant's app.
