Smart Scales

How to Choose a Smart Scale

A smart scale records each weigh-in automatically, making it easier to follow trends over time. Compare the measurements, app and connection type to find a scale that suits your routine.

Features to Compare

• Measurements: Basic smart scales record weight and BMI. Body composition models estimate measures such as body fat, muscle and body water using bioelectrical impedance.
• Bluetooth or Wi-Fi: Bluetooth scales sync when your phone is nearby. Wi-Fi scales can upload readings without your phone present, where supported.
• App and health platforms: Each brand uses its own app. Check that the app works with your phone and with any health platforms you use, where supported.
• Multiple users: Many scales can recognise more than one user, which suits households sharing one scale.
• Display and power: Compare display readability, platform size and whether the scale uses replaceable or rechargeable batteries.

A Note on Body Composition Readings

Body composition scales pass a small electrical signal through the body. Manufacturers commonly advise against using these features if you have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, or during pregnancy. Check the manufacturer's guidance, and treat readings as general wellness information rather than medical advice.

Smart Scale FAQs

How accurate are smart scales?

Weight readings are generally consistent when the scale is used on a hard, level floor. Body composition figures are estimates, so they are most useful for tracking trends over time. Weigh in at a similar time of day for more consistent results.

Should I choose a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi scale?

Bluetooth scales are simple to set up and sync through your phone. Wi-Fi scales can sync automatically without your phone nearby. Choose based on how you prefer to record your data.

Can more than one person use a smart scale?

Many smart scales support multiple user profiles and can match readings to each person. Check the number of supported users for the model.

Do I need the app to use a smart scale?

Most smart scales show your weight on the display without the app, but body composition data, history and trends generally need the companion app.
