Choosing a 4G Modem for Home, Work or Travel

Mobile broadband on 4G suits renters, holiday homes, temporary sites and anyone who wants a backup when the fixed line drops out. The range here spans plug-in USB modems, battery-powered mobile Wi-Fi and mains-powered home routers, so the right pick depends on where you will use it and how many devices need to connect.

Features to Compare in 4G Modems

• Form factor: USB sticks power from a laptop or compatible router, pocket hotspots run on a battery, and home units such as the Huawei Wi-Fi Cube plug into the wall.
• Network bands: Band support varies by model, so check that the device covers the bands your Australian carrier uses in your area.
• Carrier lock: Some Telstra and Optus devices are listed as locked to that network. Check whether a device is locked to a carrier before choosing a SIM.
• Wi-Fi standard: Selected models offer Wi-Fi 6 or dual-band Wi-Fi; check the product specifications.
• Antenna ports: Some routers accept external antennas for weaker signal areas. Confirm the connector type on the product page.
• Condition: Refurbished and open box units are clearly marked in the product name.

How to Choose a 4G Modem

1. Check mobile coverage from your carrier at the address where the modem will be used.
2. Decide between portable (battery or USB) and fixed home use.
3. Confirm band compatibility and whether the device is carrier locked.
4. Count the devices that will connect and compare Wi-Fi features.
5. Read the warranty and condition details on each product page.

4G/LTE CPE Modem FAQs

Will a 4G modem work on any SIM?

Not always. Devices locked to Telstra or Optus may only work on that network, and band support varies by model. Check the listing before buying.

Can I still use 3G with these devices?

No. 3G networks have been switched off in Australia, so choose a device that connects on 4G with your carrier.

Is a 4G modem a replacement for NBN?

It can be, depending on coverage and your data plan. Speeds vary with signal strength and network load.

Do refurbished modems include a warranty?

Warranty terms vary by product and condition. Check the warranty shown on each product page.

What is the difference between CPE and mobile Wi-Fi?

CPE usually refers to a mains-powered unit that stays at home, while mobile Wi-Fi runs on a battery and travels with you.
