5G Home Broadband and Mobile Routers Explained
5G wireless broadband can be an alternative to a fixed line where coverage is strong. Indoor gateways sit near a window and share the connection over Wi-Fi and Ethernet, while battery-powered mobile routers keep a laptop or tablet online on the move. Real-world performance depends on signal, carrier and network load, so coverage at your address matters more than the label on the box.

Features to Compare in 5G Modems
- Indoor gateway or mobile router: Gateways such as the Nokia FastMile and Inseego Wavemaker stay plugged in at home; Nighthawk M-series routers are portable.
- 5G band support: Sub-6 and mmWave support varies by model, as seen in Nighthawk M6 and M6 Pro names. Check bands against your carrier.
- Carrier lock: Some Optus and Telstra devices are offered unlocked and others may not be. Check whether a device is locked to a carrier.
- Wi-Fi 6: Many models list Wi-Fi 6; mesh-ready options include the TP-Link Deco X80 5G.
- Ethernet ports: Useful for wiring a desktop, smart TV or extra router; port counts vary by model.

5G CPE Modem FAQs
Do I need 5G coverage to use a 5G modem?
Yes, for 5G speeds. Most 5G devices can also fall back to 4G, but check the specifications and your carrier's coverage at your address.
Will an unlocked 5G modem work with any carrier?
It depends on band support. Check that the modem supports your carrier's 5G and 4G bands.
What is mmWave?
A high-frequency 5G band with limited availability in Australia. Sub-6 bands are more widely used, so check which your area supports.
Can I use a 5G gateway with my existing mesh system?
Usually yes, via an Ethernet port, but confirm port availability and your mesh system's requirements.
Are refurbished 5G gateways covered by warranty?
Coverage varies by product. Check the warranty shown on each product page.
