Understanding the Parts of a Network

A home or office network is usually built from a few pieces that each do a different job. Knowing which piece you are missing makes it easier to choose, whether you are setting up a new NBN connection, filling Wi-Fi gaps or adding wired ports for a desk or rack.

• Modems: Browse laptops-computers/networking/adsl-modems">modems and modem routers that connect to your internet service, including DSL and mobile broadband models.
• Routers and mesh: Explore routers and mesh Wi-Fi systems that share one connection across your devices and rooms.
• 4G and 5G home broadband: Compare 4G/LTE CPE modems and 5G CPE modems that use a SIM in place of a fixed line.
• Switches: Add wired ports with network switches.
• Brands: Shop the TP-LINK and D-Link ranges.

Features to Compare in Networking Equipment

• Modem vs router: A modem talks to your internet provider, while a router shares that connection with your devices. A modem router combines both in one box.
• Mesh systems: Mesh uses several units working together to spread Wi-Fi through a larger or multi-level home. Pack sizes vary.
• CPE modems: 4G and 5G CPE modems are indoor home broadband units that take a SIM. Band support varies by model.
• Switches: A switch adds Ethernet ports to an existing router; it does not connect to the internet by itself.
• Wi-Fi standard: Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 models appear across the range. Real-world performance depends on your devices, home and service.
• Carrier locking: Some Optus and Telstra branded devices may only work on that network.

How to Choose Networking Equipment

1. Confirm your NBN technology (FTTP, FTTC, HFC, FTTN or Fixed Wireless) or mobile carrier, then check the product's supported connection types.
2. Decide whether you need a modem, a router, a mesh system or a combination.
3. For 4G or 5G devices, check band compatibility with your Australian carrier and coverage at your address.
4. Check whether a device is locked to a carrier, and note any refurbished, open box or damaged box condition in the listing.
5. Count the wired devices you plan to connect and add a switch if you need more ports.

You will find brands such as TP-Link, D-Link, Tenda, Google, Xiaomi, Ubiquiti, Huawei and Asus in this range.

Networking FAQs

Do I need a modem and a router?

You need both functions, but they can be in one device. A modem router covers both, while a standalone router or mesh system plugs into an existing modem or NBN connection box.

Will this work with my NBN connection?

It depends on your NBN technology. Check whether your service is FTTP, FTTC, HFC, FTTN or Fixed Wireless, then compare that with the connection types listed on the product page.

Is mesh Wi-Fi better than a single router?

Mesh can suit larger homes or layouts where one router leaves weak spots. A single router may be enough for smaller spaces. Results depend on your home and devices.

Can I use a carrier-branded modem with another provider?

Some Optus and Telstra devices are locked to that network. Check whether a device is locked to a carrier before buying.

What does a network switch do?

A switch gives you extra Ethernet ports for wired devices such as PCs, consoles or access points. It connects to your router and does not provide internet access on its own.
